Women’s Basketball Adds Three to 2019 Signing Class

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's basketball team added three players as part of its 2018-19 class head coach Randy Norton announced on Wednesday.
Signing National Letters of Intent (NLIs) with the Blazers are Jasmine Gracie (Huntsville, Ala./Madison Academy), Samantha Mitchell (Downers Grove, Ill./Montini Catholic) and Summer Schloss (Gastonia, N.C/Ashbrook).
"We are very excited about our 2019 signing class," Norton said. "All three are of the highest character, come from winning programs and excel in the classroom. They will undeniably leave their mark on this program, campus and community."
Jasmine Gracie | Huntsville, Ala. | Madison Academy | AL Southern Starz | Post | 6'1
Gracie hails from nearby Huntsville, Ala., and was an All-State Honorable Mention performer for the Mustangs as a junior after averaging 10.2 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. She was named to the 2017 and 2018 Class 4A All-Tournament Team as she helped Madison Academy to consecutive state titles. Additionally, she was selected to the Class 4A Girls 2018 North East Regional All-Tournament Team and the 2017 and 2018 Area All-Tournament Teams. Gracie was the Mustangs' Most Improved Player as a freshman and the Strong Offensive and Defensive Rebounder as a sophomore.
In the classroom, Gracie is on pace to graduate with an advanced diploma from one of the top high schools in the state of Alabama.
Norton on Gracie:
"Jasmine is a tenacious rebounder and has a high motor. She is a power forward that can score down on the block and has the ability to step out and knock down a 3-pointer. Not only does she excel on the court, but in the classroom as well. She will be very prepared coming from a championship program and is used to winning."
Samantha Mitchell | Downers Grove, Ill. | Montini Catholic | IL Lady Lightning | PG | 5'6
Mitchell comes to Birmingham from Downers Grove, Ill., and Montini Catholic. As a junior, she helped Montini to a state runner-up finish after helping the Broncos to a third-place finish as a sophomore. Mitchell has guided her squad to three consecutive Montini Christmas Tournament titles. She was a 2017-18 Daily Herald All-Area First Team member, named to the DuPage County All-Area Team, the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association All-State Second Team and the AP All-State Third Team.
In the classroom, Mitchell is a four-year All-Area Academic Honoree, a member of the National Honors Society, Student Government and has placed on the high honor roll for four years.
Norton on Mitchell:
"Sam is a gritty, hard-nosed point guard who has the versatility to slide over and play the two guard. Knocking down the deep ball, hitting teammates at the right spot and the right time and shutting down the perimeter players is what makes her one of the premier guards in her class. What sets her apart are the leadership qualities she posses on and off the court."
Summer Schloss | Gastonia, N.C. | Ashbrook | Hoop Dreams Athletics | Post | 6'2
Schloss treks to Birmingham from Gastonia, N.C., and Ashbrook High School where she averaged a double-double with 11.9 points and 15.9 rebounds per game as a junior. She led all 3A schools in North Carolina in rebounding and ranked third overall in boards per game, while ranking 13th in the state in double doubles. Her efforts as a junior awarded her First Team All-Conference, Second Team All-District and Third Team All-State Honors. She guided the Greenwave to a 2018 Conference and County title and a spot in the Region Title Game. As a sophomore, she was tabbed Ashbrook's Most Improved Player and earned Second Team All-Conference Honors, averaging 8.0 points and 8.1 boards per game.
In the classroom she has served as Class President all four years, is a member of the National Honor Society, President of the Civinettes Club, plays the bassoon in the band, was the 2018-19 Ashbrook Homecoming Queen and is on the Academic Team.
Norton on Schloss:
"Summer is a dominant post who imposes her will inside on the defensive side of the ball. She is an outstanding rebounder and runs the floor extremely well. She is very well rounded with many talents, but more importantly she is of the highest character."
UAB returns to the court when it continues its rivalry with Memphis on Nov. 15. Tipoff between the Blazers and Tigers is set for 6 p.m. from Bartow Arena.
