Men’s Golf to Play in Conference USA Championship

TEXARKANA, Ark. – The UAB men's golf team is set to participate in the 2019 Conference USA Championship this week, April 22-25, at Texarkana Country Club.
The Blazers enter the championship event as the 1-seed and are the highest ranked C-USA team at No. 77 according to golfstat.com. UAB finished as runner-up a season ago at this event and looks to capture its first conference title since 2008.
UAB will be paired with UTSA who is the 2-seed. Senior John Hayden tees off first for the Blazers at 8 a.m. CST, followed by Murray Naysmith (8:08 a.m.), John Snoddy (8:16 a.m.), Nick Robillard (8:24 a.m.) and William Walker III (8:32 a.m.).
In their last tournament out, the Blazers placed 5th out of 15 teams at the Shoal Creek Invitational and beat two Top 25 teams in the process. UAB enters the conference championship with an overall record of 82-51-3.
Naysmith paced the Blazers by shooting -3 and finished third overall at Shoal Creek, which included defeating nine players ranked inside the Top 100. Walker III tied for 14th overall and has now been inside the Top 20 in four of five tournaments this spring.
Walker III and Naysmith led the UAB efforts at last year's C-USA Championship as Walker III finished second overall and Naysmith fifth.
The format for this year's tournament features 54 holes of stroke play which will be followed by the top four teams advancing to match play. The top seeded team after stroke play will take on the 4-seed in the semis while 2 vs. 3 will match up in the other semifinal.
The two winning teams will compete head-to-head for the C-USA title. UAB won stroke play last year but ultimately fell to Middle Tennessee in the championship round of match play.
