Men’s Golf Has Outstanding Final Day at Shoal Creek

BIRMINGHAM – Picking up midway through the second round on Tuesday morning, the UAB men's golf team played outstanding golf on the final day of the Shoal Creek Invitational to move up five spots and finish fifth overall.
Junior Murray Naysmith led the way for the Blazers the entire tournament and finished third overall. After shooting even par in the opening round, Naysmith shot 69-72 on Tuesday to finish the tournament -3 overall.
The Blazers defeated two top 25 teams in No. 13 Auburn and No. 22 Tennessee, and three of the four teams ahead of them were also ranked in the top 25. This was the final tune up as UAB looks to be one of the favorites to compete for the conference title next week in Texarkana, Ark.
"It was a great job by our guys today," said head coach Mike Wilson. "The handled the long day well. I am really excited for the way Murray played and we look forward to contending for the Conference USA title next week."
William Walker III ended yesterday first round tied for 65th, but put together consecutive two-under 70's in the final two rounds to move up 51 spots and finish tied for 14th overall at +2. Walker III has now finished top 20 in four of his five spring tournaments this spring.
Nick Robillard (77-75-73 = 225, +9) was UAB's third finisher and tied for 44th. He was followed by John Snoddy (T55) and Sam Goldasich (T84).
No. 24 Alabama won the tournament at -13, while No. 12 LSU finished second (+6), Mp. 15 North Florida third (+12), Kentucky fourth (+15) and UAB fifth (+17). Only Wilson Furr (-7) of Alabama and Cody Carroll (-5) of North Florida placed higher than Naysmith.
UAB now heads to the Conference USA Championship which is set for April 22-25 at Texarkana Country Club.
