Blazers Go for Season Sweep of Bulldogs on Tuesday Night

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB baseball team looks to complete the season sweep of over the mountain Samford when it travels to Homewood on Tuesday night. First pitch between the Blazers and Bulldogs is set for 6 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
UAB (12-17, 1-8 C-USA) took the first meeting between Samford with a 9-0 shutout victory on March 26 at Regions Field. A win on Tuesday will give the Blazers their first season sweep of the Bulldogs since 2009. UAB is 57-30 all-time against Samford.
Zack Davis leads UAB offensively, boasting the third best batting average in Conference USA with a .386 mark. The junior is coming off of a pair of multi-hit games, including a three-hit day with a home run and a double in the series finale at Louisiana Tech.
After a slow start to his senior season, Carter Pharis has gotten hot in league play, batting a team high .394 in C-USA play with 13 hits, including four doubles and a home run. The senior has tallied nine doubles this season to amass 52 for his career, the fourth most in program history.
Tanner Graham is scheduled to get the start on the bump for UAB. Graham is making his second start of the season and it will be the 37th of his career, moving him into seventh all-time in career starts. The Killen, Ala., native has allowed 16 runs, all earned, on 23 hits with 11 strikeouts over 21.1 innings of work.
Samford (19-8, 5-1 SoCon) is coming off of a 2-1 weekend at VMI and sits in second place in the SoCon standings. Brooks Carlson leads the team, batting .384 with 20 runs scored on 38 hits, including nine doubles, a triple and three home runs.
Gene Hurst is scheduled to make the start for the Bulldogs on the mound. The right hander carries a 5.79 ERA, allowing 14 runs on 18 hits with 27 strikeouts over 18.2 innings this season.
Following Tuesday's game at Samford the Blazers return to Young Memorial Field to begin a three-game series against Old Dominion. The series kicks off Friday at 6:30 p.m., with game two set for Saturday at 4 p.m. and the series finale will begin on Sunday at 12 p.m. Fans who attend the UAB Football Pepsi Spring Game Ticket can bring their tickets from that game to Saturday's contest and receive free admission.
