BIRMINGHAM - The UAB track and field team completed a two-event weekend with six top-10 finishes in competitions in Starkville, Mississippi and Nashville, Tennessee.
"Our sprint, hurdle and field event athletes had another very solid weekend," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "The 4x200 meters ran very well. They have good chemistry with their handoffs and ran very well. Marielle (Lewis) ran a solid race in the 800 meters and was just off on some technical things in the 400 meter hurdles or she drops a good time there as well."
The Blazers' 4x200 meters team of Louise Wieland, Joy Frierson, Alyssa Nelson and Ebony Tolliver finished with a time of 1:37.39, UAB's fastest time since 2013.Β
Shauntia Landrum set a personal record in the triple jump, finishing with a distance of 11.81 meters.
"Tia (Landrum) jumped really well in the triple jump and is starting to figure some things out," Thomas said. "Brittany Floyd threw the javelin well and had some other solid events as she prepares for the heptathlon." The 4x100 meters team raced well and is executing their handoffs. Overall, everyone is competing well. We are just off some technical things that we need to clean up. The distance squad had a very good week at Vanderbilt, so as a team, we had a great weekend."
UAB wrapped up the weekend with two fastest season-opener times as Kyla Horn recorded a 14.64 in the 100 meter hurdles and Joy Frierson ran a 12.16 in the 100 meters.
UAB returns to the track next weekend as it heads to Raleigh, North Carolina and Gainesville, Florida for events.
"Everyone is improving each week and that is what we need to do," Thomas said. "We are looking forward to competing at some high profile meets next week at North Carolina State and Florida. We are ready."
