GULF SHORES, Ala. – Led by a career tournament from sophomore Stephenie Fowler, the UAB women's golf team registered its best team finish of the season by placing third at the Bama Beach Bash at Gulf Shores Golf Club.
Fowler placed third overall and shot her best career round on Sunday with a four under 68. After opening the tournament with seven-over 79, the Tuscaloosa native shot even par 72 on Saturday and 68 on Sunday to finish at +3 (79-72-68 = 219).
The Blazers had four players finish inside the top 20, and all five of their golfers placed inside the top half of the field. UAB shot 903 (+39) for the tournament, which was a 32-shot improvement from this tournament last year.
"We showed glimpses of our full potential this weekend," head coach Ryan Ashburn said. "This tournament should provide our team with confidence as we build momentum towards the Conference USA Championship. I was very proud of Stephenie this week. She stepped up in a big way to lead our team and shoot a career low score. She is trusting the process and the results are showing."
Following Fowler was junior Tia Teiniketo who notched her second top-10 finish of the season. Teiniketo was 10th overall at +12 following a five-over in the final round (75-76-77 = 228).
Fellow junior Kenna Hughes notched her first top-15 finish of the season as she finished tied for 12th at +14. Hughes had very solid second and third rounds to consistently move her way up the leaderboard throughout the weekend (80-74-76 = 230, +14).
Senior Maria Donado was UAB's fourth finisher as she tied for 16th at +16 (77-74-81 = 232), while freshman Lexie Dawson moved up nine spots in Sunday's final round by shooting a three over 75 to finish tied for 26th overall (+23).
Bethune-Cookman won the tournament at +29 and held off South Alabama (+30) by one stroke for the team title. Individually, Bethune-Cookman's Yudika Rodriguez took home top honors at even par, followed by Julie Hovland of South Alabama (+1) and Fowler (+3).
The Blazers are at Memphis next Monday and Tuesday, April 1-2, for their final tournament before the C-USA Championship. The Memphis tournament will be a good tune-up for the conference championship as five C-USA schools will be there to compete.
