UAB Faces Arkansas in WNIT Second Round

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's basketball team's 2018-19 season continues on Sunday afternoon when the Blazers face Arkansas in the second round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). Tipoff between the Blazers and Razorbacks is set for 2 p.m. at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville.
UAB (26-6, 12-4 C-USA) is coming off of a 93-89 victory over Troy in the opening round of the WNIT on Thursday night as four Blazers netted double figures in the victory, while Katelynn Thomas finished with a game high 25 points on 12 made field goals. The Birmingham native ranks eighth nationally in field goal percentage, shooting 61.7 percent (174-of-282) from the floor.
Angela Vendrell had a career day in the win over the Trojans, finishing with a career high 15 points and 13 rebounds for the junior's second career double-double.
This season has been record setting from long range for the Green and Gold as they have set program bests in 3-point field goals made (288) and 3-point field goals attempted (787), while holding the third highest percentage from beyond the arc (36.6 percent). Rachael Childress leads the charge from deep, holding the school record for most triples made in a season (110) and ranks seventh nationally in 3-point field goals per game (3.4).
Arkansas (21-14, 6-10 SEC) finished 10th in the regular season SEC standings, but finished second in the tournament falling in the championship game to No. 5 Mississippi State. The Razorbacks rank ninth nationally in 3-point field goals attempted (872), connecting on 31.1 percent (271-of-872) of their attempts.
Chelsea Dungee leads the Razorbacks' offense, averaging 20.7 points per game, the second most in the SEC and good for the 18th best mark in the NCAA. The redshirt sophomore has netted double figures in 32 contests this season, including a 41-point performance against Auburn on Feb. 10.
UAB and Arkansas are meeting for just the second time in program history as the Blazers took the lone meeting, 82-48, on Jan. 16, 1981 in Birmingham.
