BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's basketball team opens play in the 2019 Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) on Thursday night when it travels to Troy to face the Trojans. Tipoff between the long time foes is set for 6 p.m. from Trojan Arena.
UAB (25-6) is making its second consecutive trip to the WNIT as the Blazers reached the second round of the tournament last year before falling to Georgia Tech. The Green and Gold have only made consecutive trips to the post season two times in school history, while this year marks the first time since 1999-00, 2000-01.
The Blazers are coming off of a 1-1 week in Frisco, Texas in the Conference USA Tournament. UAB took down Charlotte 70-55 in the quarterfinals behind 21 points from Miyah Barnes but fell to Middle Tennessee 65-55 in the semifinals. Barnes was named to the All-Tournament Team, being the lone representative for a team not in the championship game. The junior averaged 21.0 points over two games and netted a career-high five 3-pointers against the 49ers to push the Blazers to the semifinals.
UAB has been efficient from long range this season, ranking 16th nationally in 3-point field goals per game (9.0), 18th in triples made (280) and 34th in 3-pointers attempted (772). The Blazers' 280 made 3-pointers is the most in program history, while individually Rachael Childress ranks fourth in the NCAA in 3-point field goals per game (3.6), sixth in made 3-pointers (109) and 19th in triples attempted (259).
Troy (22-8) finished third in the Sun Belt Conference and is making its first appearance in the WNIT in school history. The Trojans are one of two teams nationally to lead their conference in scoring average (82.1) and rebounding (50.6) in each of the last seven seasons.
Japonica James ranks third in the Sun Belt, shooting 56.2 percent from the field, averaging 9.9 points per game. James is looking to become the first Trojans to lead their conference in scoring since joining the league in 2005.
UAB and Troy are no strangers to each other, having met 10 times before with UAB leading the series 8-2. The series began in 1979, but this marks the first meeting between the in-state foes in postseason play.
Tickets to Thursday's contest can be purchased online or at the Trojan Arena Ticket Office. All seats are general admission and are being sold for $5.
Those not in attendance in Troy can watch the broadcast on ESPN+ with Barry McKnight on the call.
