SAN ANTONIO – Playing its final road game of the regular season, the UAB men's basketball team travels to San Antonio to face UTSA on Sunday afternoon. Tip is set for 2 p.m. and can be seen on CUSA.tv.
The Blazers (17-12, 9-7 C-USA) have currently won three straight road games and defeated UTSA (15-13, 9-6 C-USA) earlier this season with an 83-73 victory at Bartow Arena on Jan. 19.
When the two teams met in Birmingham, the Blazer had a season-high six players score in double figures, led by Jalen Perry with 18 points. It was the first time in four years UAB had all of its starters score 10+ points in the same game.
UTSA was led by Keaton Wallace in that game with 33 points as he and fellow sophomore guard Jhivvan Jackson continue to put up massive numbers for the Roadrunners. The duo combines to average more than 43 points per game as Jackson is the league's leading scorer at 22.7 ppg, while Wallace is just behind him at 21.1.
Sunday's game has massive pod one implications on who will get a first-round bye in the Conference USA Tournament. UTSA is a half-game ahead of UAB in the standings, but sweeping the season series would go a long way for the Blazers in trying to secure one of the top four spots.
C-USA Standings:
1. Old Dominion: 23-6, 13-3
2. WKU: 17-12, 10-6
3. UTSA: 15-13, 9-6
4. Southern Miss: 17-10, 9-7
5. UAB: 17-12, 9-7
Senior forward Lewis Sullivan has led UAB in scoring in back-to-back games and is averaging 16.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in pod play. He averages 11.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game overall.
Following UTSA, the Blazers conclude the regular season next Saturday, March 9, when they host Old Dominion who just secured the C-USA regular season title with its last win.
