KISSIMMEE, Fla.- The UAB softball team stands at an even 7-7 after splitting day two of the Citrus Classic in its games against Morgan State (0-7) and Notre Dame (6-6). The Blazers downed Morgan State 4-0 in game one, but fell 6-0 in the day's finale to Notre Dame.
Game One: UAB 4, Morgan State 0
In yesterday's match-up, UAB's explosive offense and strong pitching sealed the 6-1 victory. The story was much of the same today as starting pitch Emily Kachel threw a one-hit shut out to help lift the Blazers to a 4-0 win.
Kachel pitched a complete game, allowing only one hit that came off of a bunt single by Morgan State's Caitlyn Williams. To make her campaign even more impressive, the starter notched nine strikeouts across her seven innings of work.
Offensively, the Blazers held their own to give Kachel the room she needed to take on the Bears' lineup. Junior Claire Blount continued to shine on day two as she crossed home plate first for the Blazers after being aboard with a first pitch, lead-off triple deep over the head of the left fielder. Teammate Sierra Frazier then picked up the RBI that scored Blount of of a grounder to short stop in the third inning.
Sophomore Sarah Crawford got in on the action in the fourth inning after a base on balls put her aboard. Crawford then stole second and third before taking home after a throw down error by the Bears catcher for the second run of the game.
The Green and Gold's final two runs came in the sixth inning off of a walk and an error that put Natalie Erwin and Ashton Clem on base, followed by an RBI single up the middle from Blount.
Game Two: Notre Dame 6, UAB 0
UAB struggled to string together any offense in its matchup with the strong Fighting Irish team as they were shut out in a 6-0 ballgame.
Starting in the pitcher's circle for the Blazers was sophomore Bailie Barnes. Barnes completed 4.0 innings after the Irish posted six hits, four runs, and one walk before being relieved by Blount who went the remaining 3.0 innings to finish the game, allowing three hits.
On the offensive side of the ball, UAB finished the game with five hits, however was unable to put enough together in order to score against the hot throwing Notre Dame pitcher, Payton Tidd. Six Blazers were left on base throughout the seven innings of play.
Players that contributed hits were Jenna Olszewski, Dylinn Stancil, Sierra Frazier, Natalie Erwin, and Rachel Owens.
