BIRMINGHAM – Coming off her title in the 5,000 meter run last night, graduate student Emily Drouin placed second in the 3,000 meter run on Sunday afternoon to conclude the 2019 Air Force Reserve Conference USA Track and Field Championships.
After holding off Linda Cheruiyot of UTEP yesterday in the 5,000, Cheruiyot was able to win the 3,000 over Drouin today by five seconds. Drouin ran a 9:35.30 which was two tenths shy of her PR, but Cheruiyot was able to separate late and crossed the line in a winning time of 9:30.67.
Drouin scored 18 of the team's 35 total points as the Blazers finished ninth overall. UTEP won the meet with 89.50 points, followed by Charlotte (81), Middle Tennessee (73), Rice (65) and Southern Miss (59.50) rounding out the top five.
"I'm very proud of the way our team competed this weekend," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "This is a tough league and our girls competed well. Emily ran a great 3K for another podium finish for 2nd. Katie ran hard but just finished outside the points. Julianne vaulted well and set a good PR. Marielle ran so tough and fought for a solid 6th place and big PR in the 800m. I'm proud of how the 4x4 ran and competed. Our goal is to improve as a team point wise each year and we did that this year. We're excited to rest for a few days and get to work on outdoor season."
Junior Marielle Lewis ran the fastest time of her in career in the finals of the 800 meter run as she placed sixth with a time of 2:13.17.
Freshman pole vaulter Emily Manning also notched a PR with a 14th place finish by clearing 3.46m (11-04.25).
Other notable performances were Shauntia Landrum with a PR in the triple and a season-best time in the 4x400 meter relay as Ebony Tolliver, Lewis, Louise Wieland and Brittany Floyd combined to run a 3:52.99.
The Blazers have a few weeks before the outdoor season begins on March 15 at the South Alabama Invitational.
