Blazers Return Home to Face Thundering Herd

BIRMINGHAM – After three games on the road, the UAB women's basketball team returns to the friendly confines of Bartow Arena on Thursday night when it welcomes Marshall to begin a four-game homestand. Tipoff between the Blazers and Thundering Herd is set for 6 p.m.
UAB (19-5, 7-4 C-USA) is coming off a 60-56 loss at Charlotte last Saturday night. A trio of Blazers netted double figures in the loss, including junior Miyah Barnes who finished with 10 points and a pair of assists. The Memphis, Tenn., native is hot as of late, averaging 13.0 points, 3.7 assists and 4.3 field goals per game over 37.3 minutes per game in her last three contests.
The Blazers are eying just their 10th 20+ win season in program history, while looking to accomplish the task in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1999-00, 2000-01. The Green and Gold set the program record for wins in a season last year, rattling off 27 victories.
One of the top offensive threats in Conference USA, UAB ranks third in points per game (73.0) and fewest points allowed per game (57.3) to boast the 18th best scoring margin (+15.7) in the nation. Rachael Childress leads a quartet of Blazers averaging double figures with 13.8 points per game. The Moulton, Ala., native ranks fourth nationally in 3-point field goals made (82), seventh in triples per game (3.4) and 14th in 3-point field goal attempts (203).
Marshall (14-10, 8-3) comes to Birmingham in a tie for third place in the C-USA standings, but is coming off a loss to league leader Rice. The Thundering Herd lead the conference in 3-point field goal attempts (500) and rank second behind UAB in triples made (194).
Shayna Gore leads Marshall's offense, ranking second in C-USA in points per game (19.8), third in steals per game (2.0) and 10th in 3-point field goal percent (36.9 percent).
UAB and Marshall are meeting for the 28th time in program history with the Blazers leading the series 14-13. The Green and Gold are 6-3 all-time against the Thundering Herd inside Bartow Arena, while head coach Randy Norton is 4-4 all-time against Marshall.
Fans in attendance on Thursday night can celebrate Valentine's Day with the Blazers. A kissing booth with UAB mascot Blaze along with a table to write love notes and check out date night ideas will be available on the concourse beginning at 6 p.m.
