UAB Hosts Cross-Town Rival Samford at Bartow Arena

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's basketball team will host cross-town rival Samford at 6 p.m. Tuesday night at Bartow Arena.
UAB (4-2) is on a three-game winning streak in which the Blazers have scored an average of 83.7 points in Bartow Arena. The Green and Gold currently post the best scoring offense in C-USA averaging 80.7 points a game, which is 20th in the country. UAB also leads the conference in field goal percentage (47.2%), three-point FG percentage (43.8%), threes per game (10.7), assists per game (17.0) and assist/turnover ratio (1.1). The Blazers post the fourth best three-point percentage in the NCAA and average the fifth most threes per game.
The Blazers have seen plenty of production from the bench in the last few games as Margaret Whitley led all players in scoring with a career high 19 points against UAH. In the Blazers win over McNeese State freshman Sam Mitchell put up 14 points going 5-5 from the field, 1-1 from three-point range and 3-3 from the free throw line. Senior forward Katelynn Thomas has been key for UAB off the bench averaging 9.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks in the last three games.
Samford (3-6) is on a winning streak of its own after taking down North Alabama and Alabama State last week. The Bulldogs have battled a tough schedule early in the season facing No. 12 Florida State, Florida, Troy and Tennessee Tech.
Sarah Myers, a senior transfer from Maryland, leads the Bulldogs in nearly every statistical category including points per game (14.0), rebounds per game (6.4), blocks (8) and steals (12). Myers recorded 17 points and eight rebounds against Alabama State.
Center Natalie Armstrong is second on the team in scoring and rebounds with 12.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Armstrong posted a career-high 27 points while reeling in eight boards in the Bulldogs loss against Tennessee Tech.
"Samford is a very well coached veteran team that is coming off back-to-back wins," said head coach Randy Norton. "It is a great inner-city game for both teams and we hope our fans and the city of Birmingham will come out to watch two good programs play."
Samford and UAB have met on eight previous occasions, including once a season the past six seasons. UAB leads the series 6-2 and is 4-2 under Coach Norton. The Blazers are a perfect 5-0 against Samford at Bartow Arena. UAB's largest margin of victory came in Norton's first season at the helm when the Blazers defeated the Bulldogs by a score of 83-50 at Bartow Arena.
