BIRMINGHAM – With the first indoor meet of the season fast approaching, the UAB track and field team is set to open the 2019-20 indoor season at the Birmingham Southern Ice Breaker on Dec. 6 at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
A main leader for the Blazers is junior Brittany Floyd, who competes in the five-event pentathlon during indoor season and the seven-event heptathlon during outdoor season.
"We're really pumped up. We're excited," said Floyd. "We're looking forward to big personal records, big achievements and big breakthroughs for everyone on the team."
Floyd, a junior from Columbus High School in Columbus, Ga., set personal bests in three indoor events a season ago. She first set her personal record in the pentathlon at the 2019 Samford Multi Meet at the Birmingham CrossPlex, where she scored a 3577 for a fifth-place finish. Shortly after at the 2019 Harvard Crimson Elite, Floyd earned her personal best in the high jump, reaching 1.63 meters to place ninth in the event. At the following meet, Floyd posted a personal best in the 60-meter hurdles with a 9.31 to finish just outside the top 10. Floyd concluded her indoor season at the 2019 Conference USA Indoor Championships, where she placed fifth in the pentathlon and contributed to a 10th-place finish in the 4x400.
During outdoor season, the junior continued her success. Floyd earned a second-place finish in the long jump and slotted into fifth place in the high jump at the South Alabama Jaguar Opener. She then nearly swept the table in the heptathlon at Samford's 2019 Alabama Track Challenge, taking first in five of seven events on the way to the gold medal. Floyd saved perhaps her best performance for last, finishing first in the long jump and fourth overall in the 2019 Conference USA Championships with a personal record 5142 in the heptathlon.
"Coach Andreassen has done a great job with the field event group," said head coach Kurt Thomas. "Brittany was such a highlight last year and is ready for another great year in the pent/hept. Newcomer Miren Ederra will be another multi to keep an eye on this year. Both Brittany and Miren are quality long jumpers, and Tia Landrum will contribute in the triple jump. Pole vaulters Julianne Manning and Anna Massa should jump high this year and hopefully get some team points in the vault. Our throwers are young, but are learning quickly and hopefully can contribute as the season goes on."
