BIRMINGHAM – Makhtar Gueye recorded a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead UAB to a 78-61 victory over Morehouse in an exhibition game on Friday night at Bartow Arena. Tyreek Scott-Grayson, Will Butler and Jalen Benjamin each added 11 points for the Blazers. Zack Bryant scored nine points and handed out five assists.
Down by one point at the 13:58 mark of the 1st half, the Blazers went on a 12-2 run over the next 3:57 to take a nine point lead at 23-14. Butler's layup at 2:11 gave UAB its first double-figure lead at 32-22. A pair of Bryant free throws sent the game into halftime with the Blazers leading 34-22.
A 9-0 run early in the 2nd half capped by Grayson's 3-pointer put UAB ahead by 22 points at 47-25. Jahein Spencer's 3-ball with 14:55 remaining gave the Blazers its largest lead of the game at 27 points at 57-30.
"This was a good game to get the kinks out. I thought we had great team camaraderie and defended well," said head coach Robert Ehsan. "The biggest positive from tonight was Will Butler. He definitely can be a force in our league," added Ehsan. The senior forward, who had been recovering from an ACL injury, returned to the court for the first time since Jan. 12. In addition to his 11 points, he had seven rebounds – six on the offensive side – in 16 minutes of play.
The regular season begins on Nov. 7 when UAB travels to Troy. Tipoff is now scheduled for 7 p.m. The home opener is Nov. 11 against Alabama A&M at Bartow Arena, also with a 7 p.m. tipoff.
