BIRMINGHAM - The UAB men's golf team tied for the lowest team score on the final day of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate en route to a fourth-place overall finish at Old Overton.
The Blazers (280-280-276 = 836, -4) were one of five teams in the field to shoot under par for the tournament. Only BYU (-17), Colorado State (-17) and Auburn (-13), finished ahead of UAB, while the Blazers defeated Alabama, Arkansas, Minnesota and Ole Miss, amongst others. UAB entered the final round in fifth place behind Minnesota but jumped the Gophers with its strong play on Tuesday.
Through three tournaments this fall, the Blazers now have an overall record of 35-7-0 and have not finished lower than fourth place in any competition.
"I am extremely proud of how our team played this week," head coach Mike Wilson said. "This was a field with multiple teams that will compete at NCAAs next May and we proved that we can not only play at that level, but win at that level as well."
Senior William Walker III continued his outstanding play by finishing third overall at -7. Walker III (67-68-68 = 203, -7) was under par in all three rounds and only finished behind Parathakorn Suyasri of Colorado State (-11) and Angus Flanagan of Minnesota (-10).
Walker III has finished top 15 in all three of his tournaments this fall, including today's top five finish, an eighth-place finish at the Graeme McDowell Invitational and a 15th place finish at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate.
Fellow senior Murray Naysmith (72-71-67 = 210, E) shot even par for the tournament and tied for 15th place. He saved his best play for the final round by shooting three under which moved him 10 spots up the leaderboard. Like Walker III, Naysmith has finished no lower than 15th in any tournament this season (5th, 8th and 15th).
Junior Ben Reichert (68-73-70) was UAB's third lowest score at +1. Reichert tied for 20th overall and sunk two eagles this week which was tied for the tournament lead.
Freshman Khavish Varadan was UAB's fourth player to finish inside the top 25 as he tied for 24th overall. Varadan (73-70-71 = 214, +4) was three over entering the final round and moved up one spot during the final 18 holes.
John Snoddy rounded out UAB's efforts with a 51st place finish at +20.
Next up for the Blazers is the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational hosted by the University of Notre Dame in Vero Beach, Fla. That tournament is scheduled for Oct. 20-21.
