UAB Drops to Conference USA Leader No. 23 WKU

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB volleyball team came up short against No. 23 WKU, falling in a sweep to the league leader on Friday night in Bartow Arena. The Blazers got off to good starts in the first and third sets, but were unable to ride that momentum to victory.
"There's always a learning lesson in every game whether we win or lose. I think tonight's lesson was when things start to get hard, we have to trust the process of everything that we're going through," said coach Amy Pauly. "We've talked about how we're a really good serve and pass team all season, but it broke down tonight. We've been good because we've worked on that since January. Again, I think we just have to trust the team, trust the process and believe in one another."
How It Happened
UAB (11-9, 3-4 C-USA) started off well, jumping ahead 7-3 in the first set. A six-point run by WKU to follow put the Lady Toppers in front though, creating enough separation to take the set. WKU scored 12 of the next 14 points soon after to take the set, 25-12.
WKU (22-1, 8-0 C-USA) took control of set two early and never let go. The Lady Toppers shot out to a 10-3 lead, gradually building up to a 19-10 advantage before taking the set, 25-16.
The third set was tight early as the Blazers were able to take an 8-6 lead out of the gate. A pair of four-point runs later pushed WKU out to a 19-12 lead as the Lady Toppers were able ride the momentum to clinch the set, 25-15, and the match sweep.
