BIRMINGHAM – The UAB volleyball team fell to Florida Atlantic by a final score of 3-1 on Sunday afternoon in Bartow Arena. The Blazers gained some momentum by taking the second set, but were unable to come out on top.
"I thought we competed a lot harder today than we did against Western Kentucky on Friday. We had a pretty good and balanced offensive game in some stretches, so that was good to see," said coach Amy Pauly. "Overall, we just learned that we have to be consistent. We have to get everyone on our team involved so there's not too much pressure on one person. We're just learning how to do that over the course of a whole match."
Player Spotlight
Redshirt freshman outside hitter Fernanda Maida stepped up to lead the Blazer attack throughout the match. The Cochabamba, Bolivia, native picked up where she left off at the beginning of the season, posting a career-high 18 kills with an efficient .471 attacking percentage and four digs.
"Fern had a great match. 18 kills and a .471 attacking percentage are really impressive numbers. I actually thought we could've given her the ball a little bit more sometimes," said Pauly. "She's a great attacker with really good vision."
How It Happened
The first set was tight throughout as Florida Atlantic gradually built a 12-8 lead. The Blazers would keep things close, going on a three-point run to cut the Owl lead to 21-18, but never move in front. Florida Atlantic later took the set, 25-20.
UAB responded in the second set, getting off to an 11-7 lead in the back-and-forth set. The Blazers continued to deliver blows up to an 18-12 advantage. The six point gap proved to be too much for the Owls despite their four-point run as UAB claimed set two, 25-21.
Florida Atlantic began to take control in the third set, jumping out to a 9-4 lead. UAB battled back to take a 15-14 lead, but Florida Atlantic scored 11 of the next 13 points for the 25-17 set win.
The Owls carried their momentum into the fourth set, going up 10-4 early. Florida Atlantic kept the pressure on with a pair of runs that boosted its lead to 15-6 and 20-8. UAB fought back with a couple of three-point runs, but Florida Atlantic closed out the set on top 25-15 for the 3-1 match win.
