UAB this season
The Blazers (10-8, 2-3 C-USA) come into the contest after splitting a pair of road matches in Texas. UAB cruised by UTEP for a sweep to open the weekend, but was later swept by UTSA in its last match.
UAB continues to be surgical from the baseline as a team, averaging 1.89 aces per set. That average ranks among the best in the country, coming in at No. 8 in the NCAA and third in Conference USA.
Individually, redshirt junior outside hitter Emma Mitchell continues to be at the Blazers' forefront in both phases. The Charlotte, N.C., native leads the team offensively with 209 kills this season, but has also pitched in defensively with a team-leading 177 digs.
True freshman setter Rachel Morse has also shined this season, orchestrating the offense this season to pile up a team-leading 535 assists along with 18 aces and 158 digs on the year. Defensively, redshirt sophomore middle blocker Anna D'Cruz has been UAB's anchor as she's totaled 69 blocks as well as 92 kills this season. Morse and D'Cruz both earned Conference USA weekly honors for their performances earlier in the year.
Scouting FIU
The Panthers (9-8, 2-3 C-USA) recently won two straight five setters over Conference USA opponents Florida Atlantic and Charlotte before being swept by WKU and Florida Gulf Coast. FIU will host UTEP on Friday prior to Sunday's match.
FIU has been led by strong individual efforts throughout the season as two players have put up some of the top numbers in the country. Sophomore setter Abbie Hughes has picked up 12 triple doubles this year, which leads the conference and ranks 12th in the nation. Redshirt senior middle blocker Chelsea Hudson has been a force offensively, posting an efficient .449 hitting percentage to rank second in Conference USA and sixth in the NCAA.
In the all-time series, the Panthers currently hold a 7-2 lead. UAB's last victory over FIU came two seasons ago as the Blazers swept the Panthers in Bartow Arena in 2017. FIU came out on top in the most recent contest between the two sides, earning a sweep over UAB on its home floor last season.
