UAB Drops Double Overtime Thriller to Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C.- The Blazers dropped a hard-fought double overtime battle against Appalachian State by a score of 2-1 Wednesday night.
What started as a defensive clash turned into a heartbreaking overtime loss for UAB.
The Blazers brought the pressure in the first half starting in the 11th minute when an Aodhán O'Hara free kick from 25 yards out sailed just over the crossbar. In the 28th minute, junior Sumner Richardson sent a beautiful strike at the net, but the App State keeper got a hand on it to keep the match scoreless.
Things would remain knotted up after 45 minutes and both teams would go into halftime with five shots a piece.
The Mountaineers broke through in the 63rd minute of the second half of play when Nick Rogers beat the UAB defenders and a charging Julian Mehl floating the ball over Mehl's head for the first goal of the match.
The Blazers would not go down without a fight as Joseph Buete found a loose ball off a blocked shot and knocked it off the top crossbar into the net for his second goal of the season. The Blazers would threaten again in the final minute of play, but Futrell's header just missed the goal.
The score would stay even at 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes, sending the match into overtime and marking the fourth overtime match for UAB this season.
After an uneventful first overtime the Mountaineers wasted no time in the second overtime period scoring the golden goal in the 101st minute to earn the 2-1 victory over UAB.
UAB will be back in action Saturday night at BBVA Field against Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. There will be a free shuttle running from Legion Field following the conclusion of the football game to the soccer game. Fans who bring their ODU football tickets to the game will receive free admission.
Men's soccer season tickets are on sale by purchasing the 2019-20 Gold Card for $65.
