KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Senior Tia Teiniketo (-4) tied for fourth place out of 114 golfers to lead the UAB women's golf team at the 2019 Palmetto Intercollegiate hosted by College of Charleston at Turtle Point Golf Course.
After an opening round 75 (+3), Teiniketo caught fire and shot a four-under 68 in the second round and a three-under 69 in the final round to finish -4 overall. She was tied for 43rd after the first round and proceeded to move up 39 spots to notch her third top-5 finish of the year and her fourth straight top 10 finish to open the season.
The Vihti, Finland native carded 10 birdies compared to just three bogeys in the final two rounds combined.
"Tia came to school this year with a list of goals she wanted to achieve and she has checked a lot off that list already," head Coach Ryan Ashburn said. "She is moving in the right direction and making the most of her senior year. She has a different attitude and swagger when she's at tournaments with more confidence and higher expectations. I'm excited to see what she will do at our next tournament against the field in Mexico."
As a team, the Blazers tied for 14th overall out of 22 universities. Through four tournaments, UAB now carries an overall record of 38-14-1.
Following Teiniketo, sophomore Caroline Waldrop was UAB's second finisher as she tied for 42nd at +7 (75-74-74 = 223).
Sophomore Chiara Vikkula (T74, +16), junior Stephenie Fowler (T98, +23) and senior Kenna Hughes (111, +32) rounded out UAB's lineup.
The Blazers now have two weeks off before heading to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for the Battle at the Beach hosted by TCU. The tournament is set for Nov. 1-3.
