SAN ANTONIO – The UAB volleyball team dropped a tough road contest at UTSA on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Roadrunners in a sweep. The Blazers led UTSA in blocks throughout the match with a 6-1 tally, but weren't able to use that advantage to clinch a set.
"Every game we play is a learning experience for us. It shows us what we're getting better at, but also exposes weaknesses," said coach Amy Pauly. "Our team has done a great job of responding to losses this year, and this Sunday won't be any different. We'll watch the film, look at how we can block and defend better, and prepare to put it into action nex weekend."
Player Spotlight
Redshirt junior outside hitter Emma Mitchell continues to pace the Blazer attack each match as she led UAB with 10 blocks, also picking up 11 digs for her fifth double double of the season. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Fernanda Maida pitched in across the board as well, finishing with nine kills, five digs and three total blocks.
How it Happened
UTSA (12-7, 5-1 C-USA) took the first substantial lead of set one, going on a five-point run to take an early, 9-5 lead. The Roadrunners kept the pressure on beyond that point, stringing together two more runs of four and five to pull away for the 25-13 set win.
UAB (10-8, 2-3 C-USA) came out hot in the second set, scoring five of the first six points to take a 5-1 lead. The Blazers maintained that lead up to a 14-13 advantage, but UTSA scored five straight points to jump in front. UAB battled back to go up again at 21-20, but five straight Roadrunner points ended the set with UTSA on top, 25-21.
The third set was back-and-forth throughout the early stages until the Roadrunners went on a five-point run to break the tie and take a 16-11 lead. The Blazers kept within striking distance throughout the rest of the set, but UTSA maintained its lead on the way to a 25-17 set win and match sweep.
