UAB Welcomes Rice for First Place Showdown

BIRMINGHAM – At 18-2 on the season at 6-1 in Conference USA, the (RV) UAB women's basketball team welcomes league leading Rice (15-3, 6-0 C-USA) to Bartow Arena on Saturday. Tipoff between the Blazers and Owls is set for 1 p.m.
UAB is coming off a 70-60 victory over North Texas on Thursday. Miyah Barnes led a quartet of Blazers to score in double figures as she finished with a game-high 20 points on a 6-of-7 day from the free throw line. The junior has netted 20 or more points in consecutive home games, while she has been most beneficial sharing the basketball this season, ranking sixth nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.6), 12th in assists (107), leading the league in assists per game (5.4).
Rachael Childress was also among those who scored in double figures against the Mean Green, netting 14 points while recording her 60th career double digit performance. Childress is tied for the nation's best in 3-point field goal attempts (177), ranks second in 3-point field goals made (74) and is sixth in the NCAA in 3-point field goals per game (3.7).
The Blazers rank first in the conference in points per game (77.0), 3-point field goals per game (9.2) and 3-point field goals made (183), while boasting the ninth-best scoring margin (+20.1) in the nation. Katelynn Thomas has been instrumental in the offensive success this season, ranking 17th nationally in field goal percentage (60.1 percent) and is tied for second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.8 points per game.
Rice is the hottest team in the league and comes to Birmingham winners of eight straight, including a 60-47 victory over Middle Tennessee on Thursday to claim sole possession of first place in the league. The Owls are surrendering the second fewest points per game in the league (56.6), while shooting a conference leading 46.2 percent (428-of-926) from the field.
Erica Ogwumike leads the Owls', being one of only two players in the league to average a double-double with 16.5 and 10.6 points and rebounds per game, respectively. The 2017-18 C-USA Newcomer of the Year has seven double doubles on the season, including accomplishing the task in the previous two games.
UAB and Rice are meeting for 16th time in program history with the Blazers holding a 10-5 advantage in the series. The Blazers are 5-2 against the Owls in Bartow Arena and are on a five game winning streak over Rice.
Saturday's game is in conjunction with National Girls & Women in Sports Day, an annual event that recognizes the empowerment that sports play in the lives of females, while highlighting the benefits that physical activity can provide to help girls push past their limits in both sports and life. Members of the UAB women's soccer and softball teams will be on the concourse pregame for photos and autographs before they will be recognized in a ceremony on the court at halftime. In conjunction with the day's events, the UAB women's basketball team will do a post-game autograph session on the concourse.
