UAB Welcomes Long Time Rival Southern Miss for Family Day

BIRMINGHAM – Looking to get back to its winning ways, the (RV) UAB women's basketball team welcomes Southern Miss to Bartow Arena on Saturday for Family Day. Tipoff between the Blazers and Lady Eagles is set for 2 p.m.
UAB (14-2, 2-1) is coming off of just its second loss of the season as it fell to Louisiana Tech 73-68 on Thursday night at home. Rachael Childress netted 23 points on a season-high seven 3-pointers made. Childress ranks second in the NCAA in 3-point field goals made (61) and sixth in 3-point field goals per game (3.8) while leading the team in scoring, averaging 15.0 points per game.
Katleynn Thomas also found the double figure scoring column in the loss to the Lady Techsters as she finished with 19 points on an 8-of-12 night from the field. The Birmingham, Ala., native ranks 14th nationally in field goal percentage, connecting on 61.3 percent (92-of-15) on her shots from the field.
As a team, the Blazers rank 10th in the nation in assists (295) and 14th in assists per game (18.4). Miyah Barnes has been a force dishing out the 10th most assists in the nation (90) with a league leading 5.6 per game.
Southern Miss (8-8, 0-3 C-USA) comes to Birmingham in search of its first Conference USA win of the season and in the midst of a four-game losing skid. The Lady Eagles possess one of the top defending teams in the league, holding opponents to the third lowest mark in the conference at 58.2 points per game.
Megan Brown leads the Southern Miss offense, averaging 9.9 points per game, while Kelsey Jones leads the league in field goal percentage, shooing 71.3 percent (57-of-80) from the field.
The two remaining charter members of C-USA, UAB and Southern Miss, are meeting for the 61st time in program history with the Lady Eagles leading the series 40-20. The rivalry between the two squads began in 1979 and has been played every year since 1989.
Saturday is Family Day at Bartow Arena. Fans are invited to attend a pregame carnival on the concourse at 1 p.m. complete with inflatables, games and face painting all free of charge. A special $20 Family Day ticket package is in order that includes four tickets, four popcorns and four sodas.
Prior to tipoff head coach Randy Norton will be honored with a ceremony to recognize the sixth year head coach for his 100th career win. Immediately following the contest, the Blazers will host their annual Saturday Shootaround where kids 12 and under can shoot baskets on the court and will be joined by members of the UAB women's basketball team.
General admission tickets to all of Saturday's festivities can be purchased online or at the Bartow Arena Ticket Office one hour prior to tipoff.
