BIRMINGHAM – Competing for the second time this indoor season, the UAB track and field team is set to run in the Blazer and Vulcan Invitational on Friday, January 11 and Saturday, January 12 at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
UAB hosts each meet annually but this season the meets are serving as a small preview to the 2019 NCAA Indoor National Championships, which will be hosted at the Birmingham CrossPlex March 8-9.
Teams that are set to compete this weekend include Miami, Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi State and LSU. Some of the Blazers' conference rivals will be in town for the meet as well and include Middle Tennessee, FIU, FAU and Southern Miss.
Both days get started at 9 a.m. with the men's shot put.
The Green and Gold come into the weekend off their winter break but will be looking to improve upon an impressive performance in their season opener back in December. UAB had eight athletes set nine PRs, including one new school record in its December meet.
Zieandrea Bridges broke the UAB school record in the weight throw with a distance of 14.86 meters and finished third in the event. Senior Emily Drouin returned to the indoor track after redshirting last season and set a new career best in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:52.42 en route to winning the event.
UAB finished the Birmingham Southern Ice Breaker in fifth place out of 23 teams.
From the Coach's Desk:
"Our staff is very excited to host the Blazer invite and the Vulcan Invite," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "We are anxious to watch our team compete and see where we are after 4 weeks away. We have been shaking the rust off the past few days at practice and now the competitions will tell us a lot about where we're at. Emily Drouin had a very good 3k in November, so we think she'll pick up where she left off and we have several other returning scorers like Marielle Lewis and Celestial Moon that we are looking forward to racing. Zieandrea Bridges has been throwing very well so we are excited to see what she can do."
Up Next:
The Blazers will drive up I-65 to Nashville for the Vanderbilt Invitational January 18-19.
