UAB Hosts Defending Regular Season Champion Rice on Sunday

BIRMINGHAM – Returning to the friendly confines of BBVA Compass Field for the first time in two weeks, the UAB women's soccer team will face its toughest challenge to date in the young Conference USA season when it hosts the defending regular season league champion Rice Owls on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Meeting for the first time since the 2015 season, the Blazers will be seeking their first win over the Owls since a 1-0 victory in Birmingham on Oct. 24, 2010.
UAB (5-4-1, 2-1 C-USA) returned to its winning ways on Thursday night, earning a big three points on the road with a 2-1 win over UTEP. Jamiera Lunsford and Caroline Kehrer each found the back of the net in the match, with Kehrer's rocket header with 13 minutes remaining in the match serving as the game winner.
Sophomore Kamilah Mustafa continues to lead UAB's offense with a team-leading 10 points and five goals on the year, while Lunsford (3) and Kehrer (2) are the only other Blazers to score goals this season. Sophomore Betsy Ornelas has been the team's top distributer, dishing out a team-best three assists on the year.
Kelsey Daugherty anchors the Blazers' defense and is coming a four-save performance on Thursday night at UTEP. Daugherty now has 54 total saves on the season, which ranks her 41st in the NCAA.
Rice (3-5, 1-1 C-USA) is coming off its first conference win of the season, a 3-1 home victory over UTSA. The Owls are led by senior Marissa Topolski, who has notched 23 shots, three assists and two goals in the team's eight games.
UAB and Rice will meet for the 12th time when they take the field on Sunday afternoon, with Rice leading the all-time series, 7-4. History will be on the Blazers' side heading into the match, as UAB holds a 3-2 all-time record over Rice in Birmingham.
