BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's tennis team returns to action on Saturday when it begins play at the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. The competition will run from Sept. 29-Oct. 8 and will be hosted by the University of Tulsa.
The tournament, which will take place at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, will be comprised of a pre-qualifying round (Sept. 29-30), a qualifying round (Oct. 1-2) and the main draw (Oct. 4-8). Championship matches will be played on Oct. 8.
The pre-qualifying round will contain 256 players who will compete for 16 qualifying round slots. The main draw will consist of 64 competitors for singles and 32 pairs for doubles.
The Blazers will look to build on their success in the opening tournament of the season. Juniors Giovani Pasini and Fernando Vargas claimed victory in the UTC Clay Court Invite doubles back draw and junior Tom el Safadi advanced to the final match of the singles back draw.
"Giovani, Daniel Janko and Fernando will be competing in the prestigious ITA All-American this weekend," head coach Derek Tarr said. "This is a great opportunity for them to compete at a national level. We are excited to get started in Tulsa."
