UAB Impresses in Season-Opening Tournament

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The UAB men's tennis team opened its fall season in impressive fashion at the UTC Clay Court Invite over the weekend, compiling wins against opponents from the likes of Chattanooga, ETSU, Memphis, Tennessee Tech and Troy at the Manker-Patten Tennis Club.
The Blazers' dynamic duo of Giovani Pasini and Fernando Vargas was victorious in the doubles back draw. After dropping their opening round match against Chattanooga, Pasini and Vargas won three-straight matches against pairs from UTC and Troy.
UAB's Daniel Janko and Tom el Safadi advanced to the round of eight by earning a first round bye before defeating Chattanooga's Luke Plaisted and Kaisei Kuroki, 6-2.
The singles competition was highlighted by el Safadi, who marched to the tournament back draw final by defeating UTC's Long, 6-3, 6-2 and ETSU's Papadopoulos, 7-6, 6-4.
The Green and Gold will look to build on its early success Sept. 29-Oct. 8 at the ITA All-American in Tulsa, Okla.
