FRISCO, Texas – Middle blocker Victoria Young has been named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
The redshirt senior played in all four of UAB's matches last week and totaled 19 blocks. She tied her career high in blocks with eight in a three-set win over in-state rival Troy, Young including a big solo block in the second set to preserve the Blazers' victory over the Trojans.
"Victoria's blocking was the anchor for our defense to be great this weekend and the reason we held teams to .134 hitting percentage," head coach Amy Pauly said. "She works so hard on every play and I'm glad she is being recognized by the conference for the influence she has on our team."
The Mobile, Ala. native was solid on the offensive end of the court as well with 22 kills and seven service aces. Young scored three aces against the Trojans and picked up two on the road at Alabama State, while adding one against Clemson and North Dakota.
Young scored 41.5 points over the week and averaged 1.46 blocks per set and 3.19 points per set. This is her first conference award.
UAB travels to East Lansing, Mich. on September 14-15 for the Auto Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational where they will take on Western Michigan, Michigan State and Albany.
