UAB Fall Camp Coverage: Practice No. 3
8/3/2018 3:59:00 PM | Football
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The pads went on and the physicality increased on Friday morning as the UAB football team wrapped up its third day of fall camp at the Football Operations Center.
TAKEAWAYS:
HEAD COACH BILL CLARK:
On the physicality increasing today:
"I think it's the reality of whether or not the running back was actually tackled or did we stay on our blocks in pass protection. We saw some good things and we saw some bad things - some things we've got to work on. It is what I expected and we will go from here, watch film and try to get better."
On the depth at running back:
"That's the question. Everyone wants to talk about Spencer, and we are very excited about him. He's had a great offseason. But there are more guys than that. Let's start with James Noble III, a guy who has been with our team a while now. He's a leader and one of the hardest working guys on our team. You've got Kingston Davis who had a really good spring. Jarrion Street is coming off an injury in the spring and Lucious Stanley, we haven't gotten to see him yet, so that's a deep good looking group we are expecting big things from."
On the freshmen in the secondary:
"I listened to those guys yesterday give a presentation in a Freshman class. I know that doesn't sound a lot like football, but the reason I say that is because they are a really good group. Very talented and very intelligent young men. They are going to do a very good job - lots of upside."
On tomorrow's Sons of UAB Reunion:
"That is something we started in 2014 when we invited those guys out to be our first guests. You don't have a ton of guests when you are getting ready for that first game, but we want those guys to know this is their home and that they are special. I love for them to get to hang out with our guys and interact. It's just a great thing. We have our Sons of UAB game in the spring when we have them come back for the first Saturday practice of the summer."
The Blazers are 27 days away from Birmingham's College Football Kickoff against Savannah State on Thursday night, Aug. 30 at Legion Field.
Along with the many activities that will be happening on the 30th, the Birmingham Food Truck Coalition will be at Legion Field, which features 10 local food trucks and craft beer tents, including: City Bowls, Devil Dawgs, Eugene's Hot Chicken, I Love Bacon, Rickard Mobile Catering, Rooski's Tamale Queen, Heavenly Donuts, Repicci's Italian Ice & Gelato and Cheezin.

TAKEAWAYS:
- Running back Spencer Brown looks to be in mid-season form and is ready to pick up right where he left off a year ago, which resulted in him being named an FWAA Freshman All-America honoree and the C-USA Freshman of the Year.
- However, that position remains one of the deepest with the emergence of January enrollees Kingston Davis and Jarrion Street - both have shown flashes during camp, along with veteran James Noble III and redshirt freshman Lucious Stanley.
- Wide receiver Austin Watkins, who was also a mid-year enrollee, had a tremendous spring and has rolled that into fall camp. The physical wideout continues to shows serious potential and big play capability.
- Defensively, the DBs are a very talented and deep group. Sophomore corner Brontae Harris saw playing time last year and looks to make the leap into the starting role vacated by Darious Williams. Harris has had a great start to camp. Another name to keep an eye on is sophomore Dy'jonn Turner who looks to see an increased role as well.
- UAB will welcome back the Sons of UAB to practice on Saturday morning as former players are invited back to get their first look at the 2018 Blazers.
