BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women's soccer team eyes its first win of the 2018 campaign on Sunday at 6 p.m. when the Blazers welcome cross-town rival Samford to BBVA Compass Field.
The matchup marks the fourth-straight game UAB has played against an in-state opponent after opening the season with an exhibition against Jacksonville State and non-conference matchups with South Alabama and (24/25) Auburn.
"Our goal for Sunday is to work on and fix some of the mistakes we made against Auburn," head coach Erica Demers said. "We got Auburn's absolute best on Friday night. They were coming off a great win over a ranked opponent and then received a ranking themselves in the top 25. The question we will answer is how do we bounce back and fix things as a team versus Samford."
UAB (0-2-0) is coming off a 6-0 loss to nationally ranked Auburn on Friday night. Kamilah Mustafa and Caroline Kehrer led the way for the Blazers with two shots each, while goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty recorded seven saves.
Samford (1-2-0) enters Sunday's game riding the momentum from its first win of the year, a 1-0 decision over Alabama State. Erin Bonner scored the lone goal for the Bulldogs in the contest as part of a six-shot evening for the junior.
Bonner and Caroline Orman lead the Bulldogs' attack, combining for two goals on 13 shots for a total of four points.
The two programs will meet for the sixth time when they come together on Sunday, with Samford holding a slim 3-2 advantage in the all-time series. The Bulldogs won the last meeting between the two sides, 3-1, on Sept. 2, 2012, while the Blazers are seeking their first win over their Birmingham neighbors since winning 1-0 during the 2011 season.
Tickets for Sunday's contest are $5 for adults and $3 for youth and can be purchased at the gate, online at uabsports.com, or by calling the UAB Ticket Office at (205) 975-UAB1.
Fans can receive access to every women's soccer, men's soccer, women's basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball game for the entire 2018-19 season by purchasing a Gold Card. Contact the UAB Ticket Office (205) 975-UAB1 for more details.
