BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Riding the coattails of an impressive 3-0 exhibition win over Jacksonville State, the UAB women's soccer team opens the 2018 regular season at home on Friday at 7 p.m. when it faces off with in-state rival South Alabama at BBVA Compass Field.
The match is the first regular-season meeting between the two squads since the 2014 season, while it is the second of four-straight contests against teams from the state of Alabama with games against Auburn (08/24) and Samford (08/26) looming on the horizon.
"I am looking for continued improvement on Friday," head coach Erica Demers said. "We were able to take moments that we needed to focus on and make them a priority in training this week. We need to be able to execute these concepts against a good opponent in South Alabama."
UAB was impressive during its tune-up with Jacksonville State on Sunday, with goals coming from Megan Hudgens, Kamilah Mustafa and Caroline Kehrer in the 3-0 win. Hudgens and Natalie Presedo also picked up assists in the victory.
Conference USA Preseason Team selection Kelsey Daugherty continued where she left off during her stellar junior campaign, coming up with six huge saves to preserve the clean sheet against the Gamecocks.
The two sides will meet for the fourth time when they take the pitch on Friday, with UAB leading the all-time series, 3-0. The last meeting between the two programs came on Aug. 14, 2016, in an exhibition match, which the Jaguars won.
The last regular-season matchup came on Aug. 22, 2014, in which UAB escaped Mobile with a 2-1 overtime victory over South Alabama.
Tickets for Friday's contest are $5 for adults and $3 for youth and can be purchased at the gate, online at uabsports.com, or by calling the UAB Ticket Office at (205) 975-UAB1.
