UAB Cruises to 3-0 Exhibition Win Over Jacksonville State

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Three different Blazers found the back of the net on Sunday afternoon as the UAB women's soccer team cruised to a 3-0 exhibition victory over in-state rival Jacksonville State at BBVA Compass Field.
The Blazers have now won back-to-back exhibition contests against Jacksonville State after defeating the Gamecocks 1-0 to open the 2017 season.
"I think it was a tale of two halves," head coach Erica Demers said. "We were really slow in the first half, which the one-and-a-half-hour rain delay did not help. In the second half, it was nice that we were able to see some of the product that we were talking about in the preseason. Overall, it was good to see the girls take the information we have been giving them all preseason and use it effectively on the field."
Junior Megan Hudgens scored the Blazers' first goal of the 2018 campaign, receiving a perfectly weighted ball from Natalie Presedo in the 18 before firing in a curling effort around the keeper and off the far post to put UAB up 1-0 in the 30th minute.
After Mother Nature forced an hour-and-a-half lightning delay, it was Hudgens who played in a cross to the waiting feet of Kamilah Mustafa, who calmly fired the ball into the back of the net at the 61:21 mark to double the Blazers' advantage.
The Green and Gold scored their third goal of the afternoon with just over five minutes to play after a misplayed back pass was picked off by Caroline Kehrer, who dribbled around the keeper and finished her goal with ease to seal UAB's 3-0 win.
Goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty went the full 90 minutes for the Blazers, coming up with six huge saves to preserve a clean sheet.
UAB kicks off the 2018 regular season at home on August 17 at 7 p.m. when it welcomes another in-state foe in South Alabama to BBVA Compass Field.
"I think we still need to be a better team defensively," Demers said. "We had moments that we showed we could defend well, but then we had moments where we took time off and didn't defend properly. South Alabama is going to be a really great opponent, so we need to make sure we are organized defensively against them and hopefully win the ball and counter against them."
