BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ryan Ashburn has been named UAB's ninth head women's golf coach, Director of Athletics Mark Ingram announced Friday.
Ashburn comes to UAB after having spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach at Baylor. In her time in Waco, Ashburn helped the Bears to three consecutive NCAA Championship appearances, including making it to the quarterfinals of match play in 2017.
"We are extremely excited to welcome Ryan to UAB," Ingram said. "She has won at every school she's been at and brings championship experience that will pay immediate dividends to our program as we look to build a winning culture here at UAB."
Under Ashburn, two Baylor players earned All-America honors with Laura Lonardi recognized in 2016 and Amy Lee honored in 2017. Lee was named 2017 Big 12 Player of the Year, while Dylan Kim won the 2017 Big 12 individual title, and both Lee and Kim picked up All-Big 12 recognition.
"I want to thank Mark Ingram and his staff for giving me this incredible opportunity to be a part of the UAB family," Ashburn said. "I am a firm believer that with hard work our team will be competitive in Conference USA and nationally in the near future.
I look forward to working with the players, administration, faculty and staff at UAB. I have heard tremendous things about Birmingham and I am excited to work with the entire community to make our UAB women's golf team a respected and competitive team while also giving back to the city.
And, a huge thank you to Baylor University for its support and dedication the last three years in helping me mature as a Division I head coach. Go Blazers."
In the classroom, 10 Bears were named to the Big 12 All-Academic Team with eight earning Women's Golf Coaches Association All-America Scholar Honorees.
Prior to Baylor, Ashburn was an assistant at Campbell for the 2014-15 season where she helped the Camels to a 2015 NCAA Tournament At-Large Berth after placing sixth at the East Regional to earn one of the 24 spots in the championship field.
In addition to coaching four 2015 All-Big South Conference honorees, seven of the eight golfers on the Campbell roster earned Big South Presidential Honor Roll recognition.
Ashburn was a four-year letterwinner at Stetson University where she was a team captain her senior season and was twice named to the Atlantic Sun All-Academic Team. Ashburn played in 98 competitive rounds for the Hatters and holds the seventh lowest stroke-average in program history.
A Seminole, Fla., native, Ashburn earned her undergraduate degree in sports management with a marketing minor from Stetson in 2014. She was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee all four years and served as Vice-President for two years.
