BILOXI, Miss. – The UAB baseball team saw its 2018 campaign come to a close with a 2-0 loss to Charlotte in the Conference USA Tournament in a game that ended at 1:49 a.m. on Friday morning at MGM Park.
UAB wraps up the season with a 21-33 record and a 13-17 mark in C-USA play. The Blazers did however make their first trip to the conference tournament since 2015.
"How do you make a case that it was a good season when you win 21 games?," head coach Brian Shoop said. "I am grateful to this group and proud of them for us taking a step forward and getting back to this tournament. I hope that this will be a step in the right direction as we move forward. I hope this will become a regular thing again like it was three or four years ago."
Charlotte (33-23) got on the board in the top of the second inning as Todd Elwood came around to score on a single after leading off the inning with a single to make the game 1-0.
The 49ers scored the final run of the game in the top of the third inning as a sacrifice fly to right field scored Reece Hampton who led off the frame with a triple making the game 2-0.
The Blazers threatened in the bottom of the eighth inning as Cole Collins was hit-by-a-pitch to lead off the inning followed by a Tyler Tolbert single. Luke Eigsti came in to pinch hit and laid a sacrifice bunt down to move the runners up 90-feet. One batter later, Colton Schultz hit a ball that had the distance to leave the park but it too far foul as he struck out on the next pitch for the second out and a fly out ended the inning and the threat.
"When Colton (Schultz) hit the ball in the eighth I thought it went out and we win the game 3-2," Shoop said.
Josh Maciejewski went the distance for the 49ers to pick up his ninth win of the season. He allowed no runs on just three hits with nine strikeouts.
"It is disappointing to go 18 innings and not score a single run," Shoop said. "With that said we faced arguably the two best arms in the league in Nick Sandlin (Southern Miss) and Maciejewski, they are a combined 18-2. I can't imagine a team facing a tougher mount than what we did."
Tanner Graham took his ninth loss of the season after going 3.1 innings and allowed two runs on five hits with three walks and just one strikeout.
Carson Jones pitched lights out in relief as he matched his career-high in innings pitched throwing 5.2 and allowed no runs on just one hit with four strikeouts in his final outing as a Blazer.
Price Visintainer, Thomas Johns and Tolbert provided the only hits for the Green and Gold as they finished with one each.
