Track and Field Groundbreaking Ceremony Set for May 30

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB Department of Athletics will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the new state-of-the-art track and field on Wednesday, May 30 at 3 p.m.
Located adjacent to the renovations that are currently taking place at BBVA Compass Field, the new track will be capable of hosting NCAA, conference and high school level meets. The two facilities will share a common pressbox, concessions stand, bathrooms and ticket booth.
UAB Director of Athletics Mark Ingram will emcee the event, while additional comments will be made by UAB President Ray Watts and UAB Vice President for Student Affairs John Jones, among others.
"For the first time in our program's 33-year history, it will have a world-class, competitive track to practice and compete on," Director of Athletics Mark Ingram said. "This will allow us to host events of different levels from around the city, state and region. It will also be a great asset to our student body, faculty, staff and citizens of Birmingham who will also have who will also have utilization of the track."
Construction on the track is scheduled to start in the upcoming weeks and the Blazers are expected to have their new home for the start of the 2019 outdoor season.
The facility will have a Mondo track surface with eight lanes each being 48 inches in width. The track also features dual straights with discus, javelin and shot put throwing spaces on the infield. The hammer cage and jumps will be located just outside the oval track.
