IRVING, Texas - UAB track and field/cross country sophomore Marielle Lewis was honored Wednesday by Conference USA with the C-USA Spirit of Service Award. She was one of 14 individuals to be recognized by the league.
The award spotlights the community service efforts of one student-athlete from each member institution. The award is based on community service, good academic standing and participation in the elected sport.
"Marielle continues to exemplify what it means to be a student athlete," distance coach Matt Esche said. "She is fully dedicated to her team, academics and helping out the Birmingham and UAB communities in whatever way possible. This award is fitting because of her love of helping others and the community."
Lewis has been named to the Dean's List, C-USA Commissioner Honor Roll and the UAB Athletic Director's Honor Roll with her 3.17 GPA in kinesiology with a concentration in exercise science. The sophomore has volunteered with organizations such as Ronald McDonald House, the Veteran's Hospital and the Miracle League of Gardendale.
She shined on the track as well setting a new indoor PR in the mile run with a time of 5:15.18. She also placed sixth at the C-USA Indoor Championships in the Women's 800-meter final running a time of 2:14.81.
The Mableton, Ga. native then set a PR at the Vanderbilt Invitational in the Women's 800-meter finishing with a time of 2:14.47.
