TEXARKANA, Ark. – The top-seeded UAB men's golf team defeated fourth-seeded Rice 4-0-1 in the semifinal round of match play on Tuesday afternoon and advances to the C-USA Championship Match on Wednesday morning at Texarkana Country Club.
The Blazers, who won the 54-hole stroke play earlier in the day to earn the top seed for match play, will play No. 2 Middle Tennessee on Wednesday morning with a berth to NCAA Regionals on the line.
"I'm thrilled for these players for what they accomplished today," head coach Mike Wilson said. "To win stroke play and then go out and prove they deserve the top seed by taking care of business in the semifinal was truly impressive. We now need to refocus our attention to tomorrow and continue to play aggressively to bring home the C-USA title."
UAB battled back on the final nine holes to take control of the match. After Rice got out to an early lead on the first five holes, the Blazers rallied and capped it off with John Hayden defeating his opponent Jake Benson on a playoff 19th hole to give UAB its third victory of the match.
Despite the slow start from the Blazers, Nick Robillard had control of his match from the beginning and eventually won 3 & 2 on the 16th to give UAB its first point. Robillard never trailed in his match.
R.J. Keur then gave the Blazer a 2-0 advantage by winning 5 & 3 on the 15th. Keur was all square with Mario Carmona at the turn before erupting on the back nine to win five of the next six holes to claim the match.
Murray Naysmith had a one stroke lead on 18 when Hayden capped the match, and William Walker III left his match with Mitchell Meissner all square. That pairing featured the C-USA champion (Meissner) and the C-USA runner-up (Walker III). Despite leaving the match unfinished, Walker III was leading for the majority of his match.
The Blazers and the Blue Raiders tee off tomorrow morning and UAB will be looking for its second C-USA title in school history (2008).
