BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Competing in the third annual CCSA Beach Volleyball Tournament in Emerson, Ga., the UAB beach volleyball team will play a minimum of four matches this weekend, April 20-22, at Rally Volleyball in Lakepoint Sporting Community.
In the 10-team tournament, the Blazers were placed in Pool B and will play a round-robin with No. 9, South Carolina, No. 10 FIU, No. 19 Tulane and College of Charleston.
Two of those five teams will advance to Sunday's semifinal and championship matches against two teams from Pool A, which consists of No. 7 Florida State, No. 8 LSU, No. 11 Georgia State, No. 18 Florida Atlantic and UNC Wilmington.
UAB opens the tournament on Friday morning at 9 a.m. against South Carolina. In the only meeting between the two teams earlier this season, the Blazers notched their most significant win in program history by defeating the then eighth-ranked Gamecocks on their home court, 3-2. It was UAB's first win over a nationally-ranked opponent and was also its first-ever CCSA regular season victory.
The Blazers then play College of Charleston on Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. At last year's CCSA Tournament, UAB defeated CofC to notch its first tournament victory in school history.
Saturday will pair the Blazers against No. 19 Tulane at 10:30 a.m., followed by No. 10 FIU at 3 p.m. UAB will look to avenge losses to both teams which were suffered earlier this season.
"We have learned so much this year embracing our tough schedule to prepare ourselves for this tournament," head coach Kyra Iannone said. "This team could not be stronger, closer and more motivated to play for each other this weekend. We are excited to show the volleyball world who we are and the culture we have built this year."
The Blazers enter the tournament receiving votes in the AVCA Top 20 poll. Following the win at USC, this is the fourth straight week UAB has been receiving votes in the national rankings.
