UAB Falls to South Carolina, College of Charleston at CCSA Tournament

EMERSON, Ga. – The UAB beach volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to No. 9 South Carolina and College of Charleston on first day of CCSA Tournament action at the Rally Volleyball Complex Friday afternoon in Emerson, Ga.
The Blazers opened competition with the top seed of Pool B South Carolina and were blanked 5-0. Besides court five, South Carolina won every match in straight sets. On court five, SalliAnne Napolitano and Annie Pringle took the first set over Caroline Skaff and Jess Vastine 24-22, but the Gamecocks' duo rallied to win the second set and then took the decisive third set 15-9.
Against College of Charleston, UAB raced out to a 2-0 lead with a win on court three followed by a victory on court one.
In three's, the pair of Gabbi Moreno and Emily Martinez defeated Riana Brennan and Kennedy Madison in straight sets 21-12, 21-18.
UAB's top pair of Kenley Adams and Devon May followed shortly behind with a 21-16, 21-13 triumph on court one over Katja Ehlers and Krissy Mummey to give the Blazers a 2-0 advantage.
The Cougars cut the lead in half with a narrow 21-19, 21-17 win on court two, and then evened the match on court five with a 21-16, 25-23 victory, leaving only court four left in action with the match tied 2-2.
After dropping the first set 21-16, Tressa Buckland and Kaylee McClure stormed back to win set two 21-11 and forced a third set. The Blazer duo however, fell 15-7 in the third and College of Charleston secured a 3-2 team victory.
The Blazers return to action tomorrow in a must-win situation to advance onto the semifinals. UAB opens action with No. 19 Tulane at 10:30 a.m., followed by No. 10 FIU at 3 p.m.
