Former Blazers Compete at Commonwealth Games, Boston Marathon

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Three former UAB track and field athletes are still going strong and in action this weekend at the Commonwealth Games and the Boston Marathon.
Elinor Kirk, Rachel Davis and Christina Chambers are all former members of the UAB track and field program who are still competing at a high level. On Saturday night, Kirk will run in the marathon for Wales in the Commonwealth Games in Australia. On Monday, Davis and Chambers will run in the Boston Marathon.
During her time at UAB, Kirk won seven Conference USA championships between cross county, indoor and outdoor track and field competition. The Swansea, Wales, native finished second at the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 10,000-meter run, finishing with a time of 32:32.99.
Kirk was a five-time All-American and still owns six school records.
Davis, formerly Rachel Harley, and Chambers both were 400-meter hurdlers at UAB with Davis scoring several times for the Blazers at conference meets. She was an All-Conference USA First Team performer in 2012 when she won the 400-meter hurdles at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships.
"All three of these incredible young women exemplify what being a student-athlete means," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "It was an honor to coach them in college, but it is even better seeing what they are still accomplishing today, both in their personal and professional lives. To be competing at such a high level, with all of the daily demands of school, work and family, is truly amazing and I couldn't be prouder of them."
Chambers and Davis have made the switch from middle distance to long distance running since graduating from UAB.
Davis is currently earning her PhD in Nutrition and Chambers is a sports reporter for WBRC Fox 6 News in Birmingham.
