AIKEN, S.C. – Redshirt sophomore Murray Naysmith erupted in the second round of The Cleveland Golf Palmetto Invitational with a tournament record seven under 63 to lead the UAB men's golf team on the opening day of action in South Carolina.
After a three over 73 to open the tournament, Naysmith carded an astonishing eight birdies in the second round, along with one bogey, for his tournament record 63. He is currently in fourth place overall and enters Tuesday's final 18 holes at four under for the tournament.
Naysmith's 63 ties UAB legend Graeme McDowell for the second lowest score in program history, which is one off the school record 62 which is shared by Will Cannon (2015), Zack Sucher (2008) and Garrett Osborn (2005).
"Murray was absolutely on fire in the second round and it was impressive to watch," head coach Mike Wilson said. "To have eight birdies in one round is amazing, but it was even more remarkable to accomplish that in the second round of a 36-hole day. As a team, we have positioned ourselves to win this tournament and we need to refocus tomorrow and play with the same intensity we did today."
The Blazers played very well collectively and find themselves in fourth place at -2 and just seven strokes off the lead which is currently held by Virginia (-9).
Four of UAB's five golfers are currently inside the top 30 in a field consisting of 90 players. Following Naysmith, William Walker III (69-71 = 140, E) and John Hayden (68-72 = 140, E) find themselves tied for 19th, while R.J. Keur (71-71 = 142, +2) is currently tied for 29th.
Led by Hayden, the Blazers shot a 281 (+1) as a team in the first round and were in a tie for third after 18 holes.
Hayden shot a two-under 68 which had him tied for sixth after the first round. He was very consistent in the first round and had four birdies on his scorecard, but his only blemish was a double bogey on 17.
Murray then carried the torch in the second round with his tournament record 63 and shot up the leaderboard into fourth. The Blazers carded a 277 (-5) in the second round.
Action at the Palmetto Golf Club concludes on Tuesday with the final 18 holes as the Blazers look for their first tournament title of the season. Fans can follow live results throughout the day by clicking here.
