Blazers Drop Two Tough Matches on Day One of Conference USA Shootout

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men's tennis team found itself in two tough battles on day one of the Conference USA Shootout but could not come out on top as the Blazers fell to Rice, 4-2, and UTSA, 4-3, on Friday.
Sophomore Tim Dollman claimed two of the Blazers' victories on Friday, toppling Rice's Eric Rutledge 6-1, 6-2 before handling Kai Breitbach of UTSA, 6-1, 6-3, to close out the day. Dollman is now 15-2 in singles play on the year with all 15 wins coming in the No. 1 position.
Fellow sophomore Tom el Safadi earned his eighth singles win of the year with a 6-3, 6-2 victory on Court 6 over Ashton Duke.
In the second match of the day against the Roadrunners, the Blazers got off to a fast start with a 7-6(5) win on Court 1 by Dollman and Stefan Gonzalez and a 6-2 win from Kenton Parton and Anru Fourie to claim the doubles point.
Dollman's singles win over Breitbach, coupled with a 6-0, 6-3 win by Giovani Pasini over Joao Ceolin, put the Blazers up 3-1 in the match. However, UTSA finished the match with three-straight singles victories to claim the 4-3 win.
UAB (11-8, 0-4) returns to action on Saturday at 10 a.m. when it faces off with Southern Miss in the final match of the Conference USA Shootout in San Antonio.
