BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team fell to Jacksonville State 4-1 on Wednesday night at Mary Bowers Field as the Gamecocks scrapped their way to a win.
In the top half of the third JSU used a one-out double, a UAB fielding error and a single to push across its first run of the game and tie it up at 1-1. Another single drove home the Gamecocks second run and they took a 2-1 lead into the bottom half of the third.
Jacksonville State (15-16) scratched across two more runs as they hit a two-out double followed up by a single to score the run from second. Collecting its third hit in a row, JSU used another single to score its fourth run of the night and take a 4-1 lead.
UAB (11-21-1) scored its lone run of the night in the first inning when Sarah Crawford hit a triple to right field to score Analyse Petree who reached earlier in the inning on a walk. Crawford was the bright spot for UAB on Wednesday night as she went 2-for-2 with the triple, an RBI and a walk.
Emily Kachel got the start in the circle for UAB and tossed three innings allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits while recording two strikeouts. Kachel took the loss and falls to 8-9 on the year.
Megan Smith and Claire Blount also saw action in the circle as Smith threw two innings in relief for Kachel allowing just one hit and striking out one. Blount had two innings of work as well, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out two batters.
Relief Effort
UAB asked fans to bring nonperishable food items or bottled water to the game on Wednesday night to be donated to Jacksonville State and the entire Jacksonville, Ala. community in the wake of the March 19 tornados that passed through Jacksonville and the JSU campus.
"I just want to thank our entire fan base for its out pouring of love and support for Jacksonville and Jacksonville State," head coach Amanda Ellis said. "We might be rivals on the field but we're family off it and we have to take care of each other. Tonight just shows how much our communities care for one another and it was very touching and special to be a part of."
