BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A career high 8.1 innings from starting pitcher Tanner Graham gave the UAB baseball team a 3-0 win over Conference USA first place team LA Tech on Friday night at Regions Field.
"It was just a great college baseball game," head coach Brian Shoop said. "Anybody that came to the game tonight saw Division I baseball at a very high level. The pitching was outstanding, the defense was outstanding and we had great at bats against a really good arm. I am really proud of the kids because that was a good win against a very good team."
UAB (10-10, 3-1) grabbed a lead in the first inning that it would not relinquish. Tyler Tolbert led off the frame with a walk before swiping his 10th and 11th stolen bases of the season to put him at third base with no outs. After consecutive fly outs, Carter Pharis knocked his 12th RBI of the season to score Tolbert and give UAB a 1-0 lead.
The Blazers tacked out another run in the fourth inning when leadoff hitter Zack Davis reached second on an error by the LA Tech left fielder. Price Visintainer sacrifice bunted Davis to third before Antonio Ralat tallied his second hit of the night to score Davis as UAB took a 2-0 lead.
Tolbert reached base for the third time in the seventh inning with a one out single into left field and advanced 90-feet on the throw. After swiping his third base of the game, he stood on third with Cole Collins at the plate. Collins drew a walk on a wild pitch that scored Tolbert as UAB scored its third and final run of the contest.
LA Tech (17-7, 3-1) threatened in the ninth inning as it got bases loaded with one out. Ty Harris came in in relief for Graham and pitched to one batter before Carson Jones came in and struck out the side to pick up the save.
Graham (1-2) earned his first win of the season after a dominant outing in which he allowed just four hits, three walks, four strikeouts and induced nine groundouts. Jones picked up his second save of the season.
Matt Miller (3-1) suffered the loss for LA Tech, his first of the season. He lasted 6.2 innings giving up all six of the Blazers' hits and all of the game's run while striking out five batters.
Tolbert and Antonio Ralat led UAB offensively. Tolbert finished the night 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a career-high three stolen bases, while Ralat was 2-for-2 with a RBI and was hit by a pitch on two occasions.
After recording just one shutout in 2016, the Blazers are up to three this season through the first 20 games.
Game two of the series between UAB and LA Tech is set for 2 p.m. at Regions Field.
