BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB beach volleyball team returns to action this Saturday and Sunday, March 23-24 in Columbia, S.C. as the Blazers partake in the Gamecock Challenge hosted by No. 8 South Carolina.
The Blazers open competition on Saturday with matches against rv-TCU at 12 p.m. and CCSA opponent UNC Wilmington at 4 p.m.
UAB returns to action on Sunday night with contests against two top 10 teams in No. 3 Hawaii at 4 p.m. and the host Gamecocks, who are ranked No. 8 nationally, at 6 p.m. (all times eastern).
"This field is comprised of some of the top programs in the country and we are excited and ready for the challenge," head coach Kyra Iannone said. "While we have played solid at times, I am hoping to see more consistency across all courts."
UAB will have the opportunity to establish program firsts in two different categories this weekend. The matches against Hawaii and South Carolina will provide a chance for UAB to defeat a nationally ranked opponent for the first time in program history, while UAB will look to win its first CCSA regular season match the Blazers play UNCW and South Carolina.
While UAB picked up its first CCSA tournament win over College of Charleston in 2017, it is 0-13 all-time in regular season play and will try to snap that this weekend.
Following last weekend's Blazer Beach Duals, UAB improved its overall record to 5-2 with wins over ULM (4-1) and Mercer (3-2). Kenley Adams and Devon May led the way as the duo combined for a perfect 3-0 record on court one, including a victory over No. 17 Tulane.
Adams and May have an unblemished mark since pairing together on court one (5-0) and both are tied for the team lead at 6-1 overall.
With the exception of South Carolina, each foe in the tournament is an unfamiliar one. UAB is 1-0 against UNCW, 0-1 versus TCU and has never met Hawaii in the sand.
