UAB Drops a Pair of Matches on Day One of Gamecock Challenge

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The UAB beach volleyball team (5-4) lost a pair of matches to TCU and UNC Wilmington by identical scores of 4-1 on the opening day of the Gamecock Challenge at the University of South Carolina.
Teaming together for the first time this season, senior Gabbi Moreno and freshman SalliAnne Napolitano won both of their matches on court five to earn UAB's lone point in each match.
The Blazers opened the day with a heartbreaking 4-1 loss to the Horned Frogs in which four of the five matches went three sets.
TCU won three of those four three-set matches, while the UAB victory came from Moreno and Napolitano as the duo outlasted Claire Doyle and Avery Arellano 15-13 in the third.
With the Horned Frogs leading the match 2-1, UAB forced a third set on courts one and two for an opportunity to win the match. Unfortunately for the Blazers, TCU captured the third set on court one 15-12 and on court two 15-13 to secure the team victory.
In the second match, UNCW raced out to a 1-0 lead with a court four victory, but the Blazers responded to even the match with a 21-16, 21-14 victory on court five courtesy of Moreno and Napolitano.
The Seahawks However, went on to capture the three remaining matches on courts one, two and three to hand the Blazers a 4-1 defeat.
UAB returns to action on Sunday night when they conclude action at the Gamecock Challenge with No. 3 Hawai'i at 4 p.m. and No. 8 South Carolina at 6 p.m. EST.
