IRVING, Texas – After posting a 5-1 record over the course of three matches last week, UAB sophomore Marlene Herrmann was selected as Conference USA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Herrmann was a perfect 3-0 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles action in helping UAB win two of its three matches en route to becoming the seventh women's tennis student-athlete in program history to win the award. In addition, Herrmann is the first Blazer to earn the distinction since Julia von Samson in 2007.
A native of Dresden, Germany, Herrmann opened the week by posting a 6-4 victory in doubles over Asel Jumamukhambetova and Jemima Potter to clinch the point for UAB. She went on to win to defeat Potter 6-2, 6-0 in her singles match to help the Blazers post a 6-1 win over the Skyhawks.
In the following match against Murray State, Herrmann was part of both clinching points, as she and Sonia Grzywocz defeated Claire Chang and Jeanne Masson 6-3 at No. 1 doubles to put UAB ahead 1-0. Herrmann continued her winning ways and sealed the win for UAB following her 6-1, 6-0 victory over Stasya Sharapova at No. 2 singles.
Herrmann capped her week with a 6-3, 6-2 singles victory over Elpida Malamou of WKU on Saturday.
"I am very happy for Marlene, she is very deserving of this award," UAB head coach Mark Tjia said. "She has been working very hard at valuing her mental toughness over how well she is hitting the ball and it has definitely shown in her results as of late."
Herrmann and UAB return to action Wednesday at 1 p.m. with a match at Elon.
