BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Despite out hitting Troy six to five, the UAB baseball team fell 4-1 to the Trojans on Tuesday night at Regions Field.
"If we don't score than more one run we are not competitive and cannot win," head coach Brian Shoop said.
Troy (12-5) struck first in the second inning after Chase Smartt hit a one-out double to center field. He came around to score two batters later on a wild pitch giving the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
The Trojans plated two more runs an inning later in the third when Cole Prestegard hit a two-run home run to right field extending the lead to three.
UAB (6-9) scored its lone run of the game in the sixth inning when it was able to string together consecutive singles from Price Visintainer and Cole Collins. Zack Davis hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Visintainer and cutting Troy's lead to 3-1.
Joey Denison provided the Trojans some insurance in the eighth inning with an inside the park home run giving the game its final 4-1 score.
Sadler Goodwin (1-1) earned the win for Troy while CJ Carter collected his third save of the season. Cole Whitman (0-1) took the loss for the Blazers.
Collins once again led the Blazers offensively finishing the night 2-for-4 and tallied his third multi-hit game of his career.
Carson Jones was stellar in relief on the mound for the Blazers as the senior came on to pitch the fifth and sixth innings and allowed no hits, while collecting a season-high three strikeouts.
UAB opens Conference USA action this weekend with a trip to Charleston, W. Va., to take on Marshall March 16-18. First pitch between the Blazers and Thundering Herd is set for Friday at 3 p.m. CT from Power Park.
