BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Blazers used an electric fifth inning rally to come back and win its conference opener against Marshall 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Mary Bowers Field.
The Thundering Herd's Grayson Radcliffe broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth with a home run to center field but the 1-0 wouldn't last long.
In the home half of the fifth, Katlyn Sides drew a one-out walk and was followed up by Natalie Erwin who also drew a walk to put runners on first and second with one out. A fly out put UAB in a two-out whole but Destini England stepped to the plate and provided some two-out magic.
England took a 1-2 count pitch a laced it to the left field corner which sent Sides and Erwin racing around for home and both runners scored as England slid into third for a two-run RBI triple.
Marshall (8-13, 0-1 C-USA) threatened in both the sixth and seventh innings but starting pitcher Emily Kachel shut them down both times.
In the sixth, Marshall got a one-out double and advanced the runner to third on a grounder to second. However, the Hurd's Madi Marshall hit a comebacker up the middle that Kachel snagged for the final out of the inning.
After Kachel got two quick outs in the seventh, the Thundering Herd used back-to-back bunt singles to put runners on first and second. Kachel battled on and got the final out of the game on a pop-up to the shortstop.
Kachel tossed her fourth complete game of the season and improves to 6-6 with the win. The Kennesaw, Ga. native gave up six hits but allowed just the one run. Marshall drew two walks against Kachel but she tagged them for three strikeouts.
UAB (8-17, 1-0) ended its three game losing skid with the win over Marshall and improves to 4-1 in its last five conference openers. The Blazers also improve to 22-17 all-time against the Thundering Herd and are 12-4 all-time at home against Marshall.
The Blazers and the Hurd were scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday and got the second game started but in the top half of the fifth the skies opened and put a halt to the proceedings. UAB was leading when the fifth started but Marshall tied the game up at 4-4 before the stoppage.
Game Two will resume tomorrow, Sunday, March 11 at 12 p.m. CT. The final game of the series will be played following the conclusion of Game Two.
